What
is obesity? Many people think that obesity goes no deeper than a less
than desirable look. They are wrong - obesity is a disease
that is spreading fast in today's world, almost to epidemic proportions.
Obesity
means having too much fat on your body. Firstly, this puts a strain on
joints and bones, which can lead to arthritis in the long term.
Eating
too much of the wrong kind of food is likely to lead to high
cholesterol, which constricts the blood vessels, leading to impaired
function of your heart and arteries. This can result in high blood
pressure, stroke and other blood and heart conditions. Excess weight
also causes apnea, the cessation of breathing during sleep - snoring is
a mild form of this.
Are
you obese? The textbook definition is a body mass index (BMI) of 30 or
above. The BMI was developed by Belgian scientist Adolphe Quetelet in
1840. The higher your BMI, the higher your risk of contracting certain
diseases, such as heart diease. You can calculate your BMI
like this:
1.
Measure height in metres and multiply the figure by itself.
2. Measure your weight in kilograms
3. Divide the weight by the height squared (ie. the answer to Q1). For
example, you might be 1.6m (5ft 3in) tall and weigh 65kg (10st). The
calculation would then be:
1.6
x 1.6 = 2.56. BMI would be 65 divided by 2.56 = 25.39.

The
consequences of being overweight or obese can be devastating in many
ways. Whether you are overweight because of your own lifestyle choices
or through no obvious fault of your own, chances are you have to face
the prejudices of others everyday.

Self-esteem
depends largely on how other people see us. Unless you are egotistical
or have great willpower, you are bound to care about the opinions of
others. Sorry to say, most people don't have a high opinion of
obesity. Maybe they think you're lazy or greedy.
Maybe they stare at you wherever you go. Maybe they throw bad jokes and
insults your way. It's hard to have high self-esteem in the face of so
much negavity.
But
lack of self-esteem can lead to a vicious cycle. Do you
prefer to stay indoors to avoid those insulting looks from others? This
could lead to even more weight gained from lack of activity, making it
harder than ever to exercise and so on. It is also likely to lead to
boredom, and when you're bored don't you tend to eat more? In addition,
low self-esteem can make it very hard to motivate yourself to improve
your life.
Unfortunately
this behaviour can so often lead to depression. Staying home,
bored, inactive and lonely can knock your self-esteem so low that you
become depressed. And for so many of us when we're depressed,
eating is one of the few things that cheers us up.
